Causes of eye pain

The following are common causes of eye pain, based on the location of the discomfort.

Pain on or inside your eye
Eye pain that resembles having something in the eye is often caused by irritation or inflammation of the front surface of the eye, especially the cornea.

Common causes of pain from the front surface of the eye or inside the eye include:

Foreign body in the cornea

It is not surprising that what often causes the sensation of the presence of a foreign body in the eye is an actual foreign body. Common foreign bodies that can stick and become embedded in the corneal surface include mineral sawdust, inorganic granules (sand and small stone particles), sawdust and other organic matter.

The discomfort of having a foreign body in the cornea can range from mild to severe, and is usually very annoying when blinking (since the eyelid often rubs the eye during blinking). Also common are blurred vision and sensitivity to light.

The presence of a foreign body in the cornea requires urgent attention from an eye care professional because the substances contained in the cornea can quickly cause serious eye infections.

Most foreign bodies in the cornea can be easily removed in the eye care specialist’s clinic using the right tools. Antibacterial eye drops may be prescribed to prevent infection during corneal healing.

Scratching the cornea

This is a scratched cornea. Although most corneal scratches are not serious, they can be very uncomfortable and cause sensitivity to light and watery eyes.

Many superficial corneal scratches heal on their own within 24 hours. But deeper scratches can lead to serious eye infections and even corneal ulcers if left untreated.

Because it’s often impossible to tell if eye pain is caused by a slight scratch, deep scratch, or foreign body in the cornea, it’s a good idea to see an eye care professional when the sensation of any severe eye discomfort doesn’t go away very quickly, to determine the underlying cause.
