Abstract
MY PROVERB, MY IDENTITY: AN ANALYSIS OF SOME HAUSA PROVERBS
ON THE IDENTITY OF THE HAUSA
This discourse gives a close look at the place of proverbs in identity construct of Hausa people of Northern Nigeria. Proverb as a phrase that expresses a basic truth which may be applied to common situations is used to prove that the identity of the Hausa is built in their proverbs. The paper further argues that the people have apposite proverbs for everything that gives their
identity. Indeed, the Hausa have a kind of identity for themselves. This identity is reflected in their proverbs for easy identification. The proverbs which give identity to the Hausa are abound in their ways of life including marriage, birth, schooling, worldview and perception, thought, etc. Thus, the paper concludes that, the people’s proverbs, if referred to, can, without tears, lead to their identity construct.

يعطي هذا الخطاب نظرة فاحصة على مكان الأمثال في بناء الهوية لشعب الهوسا في شمال نيجيريا. يستخدم المثل كعبارة تعبر عن حقيقة أساسية يمكن تطبيقها على المواقف الشائعة لإثبات أن هوية الهوسا مبنية في أمثالهم. كما تجادل الورقة بأن الناس لديهم أمثال مناسبة لكل ما يعطي هويتهم. في الواقع ، لدى الهوسا نوع من الهوية لأنفسهم. تنعكس هذه الهوية في أمثالهم لسهولة التعرف عليها. الأمثال التي تعطي الهوية للهوسا كثيرة في أساليب حياتهم بما في ذلك الزواج والولادة والتعليم والنظرة إلى العالم والإدراك والفكر وما إلى ذلك. وهكذا ، تخلص الورقة إلى أن أمثال الناس ، إذا تمت الإشارة إليها ، يمكن أن تؤدي ، دون دموع ، إلى بناء هويتهم.
