THE CASE STUDY OF HAUSA WOMEN CONVERSATIONS AT SOCIAL OCCASIONS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA.
Abstract
The question of the interrelationship involving languages and identity is a major concern for many social theorists and researchers. This is because language identities are intimately
associated with societal social life and control each other. There may be restrictions to the account of the relations between language, identity and socio-cultural disparity. However, this paper wants to talk about Language and social identity in women interactions, at the formal occasions, amongst the Hausas of, Northern Nigeria. The aim is to explore situations of women statements in contemporary industrial Hausa society. Thus, the paper stands to serve an instances that will develop interpretive sociolinguistics approach to human interaction which account for social identity. The paper proposes that female gender stands exceptional in various social expressions at social occasions and situations. Such recognized areas include the need for female curative medicine, the speech used at marriage, birthday and other situations. The paper concludes that Hausa women social attributes are specially identified in the language they speak to express themselves. In order to achieve this goal, a careful understanding of the relations between language, identity and the women social dealings in the Hausa society become necessary.
